Keeping It Glam as a New Mum!

So you’re a new Mummy! Congratulations!! But let’s face it, in those early days of motherhood just having a shower and washing your hair can feel like a major accomplishment. Finding the time and the energy to get back to your regular beauty routine is most likely going to be feel like the last thing in the world you can be bothered with.

Gone are the days when you can lay in the bath with a book for an hour with a face mask on. Now it’s all about the three minute shower you rush to have whilst baby is napping! Once Josh came along I was less conscious about how I looked, although I certainly still made a bit of an effort. Once baby arrives though, there are more important things to worry about. But still having that bit of a beauty routine and keeping on top of these things goes a long way in helping you feel like you again

Once I’d really started to recover from labour and my C Section, I longed to get back to a bit of normality and get my beauty regime back. Of course being a new Mummy means you might have to adapt things a bit to fit in with your new lifestyle, and by no means am I saying this should take away from your time as a Mummy, but it doesn’t mean you have to let a bit of pampering fall to the wayside.  You can still feel glamorous even as a sleep deprived new Mummy.

Shower, Shower, Shower

Make sure you shower every single day! It can be so easy in the very early days to fall into that trap of skipping a shower because you’re exhausted, and out of sync with the sleep deprivation, but don’t let it happen. Even if you have to have the quickest shower in the world, those three minutes can feel wonderful and make you feel human and ready to face the day again.

Morning Routine

One thing I managed to maintain after having Josh was a bit of a morning routine.  It’s only generally 20 minutes but in that time I shower, wash my face, get dressed, do my hair and put on a bit of make up. I am very very lucky that Josh naps in the morning for a good 40 minutes so I have time to do this, and I know this may change at any time. But if are able to do this it makes you feel a bit more human and like yourself again.  It might only be 15-20 minutes but it still counts as a bit of you time.

Skin care

Pregnancy and having the baby can make your skin go crazy; thanks to those good old hormones!! Stick to your age old favourite products and stock up on them so you don’t have to scrimp on how much you use. For me, I love the Superdrug B Beautiful Skincare range and use their micellar water and also their refreshed essence lotion which is actually more of a liquid that you put on your skin before moisturiser. As for moisturiser, I always used Lancôme Hydra Zen Day Cream, but recently on a whim I bought some of the Aldi Caviar Illuminating face cream and Oh My God, it is AMAZING! It’s only £6.99, it’s thick and luxurious and I absolutely love it!

Beauty Sleep

I know this irritates some people when this is said, but please do nap when the baby naps. The magic 20 minutes of rest can help you feel human again and stop you from having an overtired hormonal meltdown! I won’t nag anymore on this subject, but please do try!

Get your hair done

After a few weeks, when you’re feeling ready and up to it, go to the hairdressers. It will make you feel like a new woman. I loved going to get my hair done after having Josh; it was a great excuse to have a hot cup of tea, read the latest crappy magazines and have a little pamper. We’ve been through labour; we deserve this! As my friend put it “it’s hard to be happy in life with bad hair”.

Basic Make Up is Key

Applying a full face of make up is the last thing any mum can be bothered to do; no matter how good you’re feeling.  Stick to basic classics; a highlighting foundation, under – eye concealer (standard, now you’re a new mum), a bit of blush and the absolute essential , mascara!! If you can only be bothered to put on one item of make up, make it mascara. I couldn’t live without it and my new favourite is Maybellines the Falsies Push Up mascara and you can see below how it looks before use, with one coat and with two coats. It’s a god send and manages to make me look awake even if I’ve only had four hours sleep!

Keep the hands young

Once you have a baby you seem to wash your hands fifty thousand times more than you ever used to, and in turn this totally dries them out. I’ve taken to keeping handcream dotted around the house; by the sinks, on my bedside table, and in the changing bag. Every time you see it, put some on and that should prevent any dried out and wrinkly hands.

Paint Your Nails

I know it sounds like the impossible; doing your nails whilst having a baby to look after is no mean feat. You’ll manage to do one coat before baby will kick off and you’ll have to pick him up which will result in smudged nails and an irritated mummy! I read one tip which I just love; it may literally take all day but try doing them a stage at a time. So when munchkin is having a morning nap do one coat, leave it to dry then do the next coat during babies afternoon nap and finish off in the evening when baby has gone to bed. If that all sounds like a bit of a palaver then invest in one of the 60 second dry varnishes from Rimmel; they are my personal favourite and come in loads of colours and are touch dry within 60 seconds!  A top coat, if you have the time (and patience) can make them last even longer.

Treat Yourself

Once your little one arrives it’s all baby, baby, baby! Make the time to treat yourself – you’ve just had a baby you deserve it. And thank god for online shopping which can make a night feed far more interesting. Treat yourself to nice new changing bag (I am in love with the PacAPods), or some nice maternity underwear; it doesn’t all have to be shapeless and boring, there are some gorgeous nursing bras out there and many come with matching knickers. Elle Macpherson does a gorgeous range and there are loads on Figleaves so have a nose and pass the time on those long night feeds in a far more appealing way!

As a new mum, especially for the first time, it’s easy to feel like you’ve lost yourself a bit. Your body has been taken over by your baby for the last nine months and is now on tap, literally, for feeding. But it’s important to have a bit of time for you, and a bit of a girly pamper. It will cheer you up and everyone knows a happy mummy equals a happy baby. Don’t feel guilty because you long to have a bath or paint your toenails; it’s not selfish, you’re human and we all need that bit of escapism at times. Being a new Mum is magical but it can also be overwhelming and it’s important to have a bit of time for you sometimes too, even if it’s just a half hour bubble bath! So indulge and enjoy you gorgeous yummy mummies!
